Wallpapering Technique

Before you begin, ensure all rolls of wallpaper have the same batch number. Keep a slip with the batch number in case you run out of paper.

Consider where you are wallpapering. When papering a chimney breast for example start at the center of the chimney breast. Ensure you have the full pattern at the top of the first strip to avoid cutting through the design.

This creates an overall symmetrical finish and means any design which has been cut through will be at the bottom and not as noticeable.

Domes, Vaults And Arches Are Now A Reality At Home

(HIT) - Ornamental domes, vaulted and tray ceilings, curved archways and soffits have long been the norm in many commercial buildings, where they have replaced traditionally flat walls and ceilings. But advanced technology is now enabling homeowners to enjoy the same three-dimensional designs in their residences.

The key to this revolution is a breakthrough ceiling suspension technology. The system utilizes pre-engineered, integrated components that eliminate the guesswork often involved in the design process, while reducing installation time by up to 50 percent compared to other types of ceiling installation methods. As a result, today’s homeowners can request more dramatic add-ons to their new residence or consider a variety of new options in all types of remodeling projects.

As a result, today’s homeowners can request more dramatic add-ons to their new residence or consider a variety of new options in all types of remodeling projects.Called the USG Drywall Suspension System, the technology was developed by the same company that invented SHEETROCK® Brand Gypsum Panels and later introduced the first acoustical ceiling panels. It can be installed easily by just about any remodeling contractor or carpenter.

This innovative suspension system facilitates the design of unique domes, barrel vaults, archways and soffits.

The system can be used in a variety of ways in just about any home:

  • Soffits are virtually synonymous with kitchens, and are typically used to fill in the open spaces between the ceiling and the tops of wall cabinets. They can also be used to add dramatic flair or to define specific spaces. To create a variety of different looks, consider a curved, boxed or stepped soffit.
  • Keep in mind that while traditional in the kitchen, soffits aren’t limited to this area of the home. More ornate ceiling treatments in the master bedroom with tray or coffer ceilings and even domes or vaulted ceilings are becoming increasingly popular.
  • A drywall suspension system makes creating arches and domes almost as simple as playing with an erector set! Your builder or contractor can order prefabricated pieces to create an arched hallway, vaulted ceiling in an entryway or living room, or a barrel ceiling over a sunken tub in a master bath. Paired with unique lighting, these designs can add a distinctive look to a home.
  • When it comes to finishing off a basement, the drywall suspension system can be wrapped easily around offending pipes and ducts to provide an economical solution for hiding mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems during renovations. It also creates a smooth ceiling surface that can maintain maximum heights with minimum clearance.

While the old-fashioned way of achieving dramatic architectural looks was time-consuming and expensive, the drywall suspension system can help add incredible architectural detail to your home without breaking your budget.

Free Guidebook Helps Consumers With Green Choices For Hardwood Floors, Cabinets

(HIT) - How would birch cabinets look with the existing oak floor? How do I know if they’re green and sustainable? How can we save money on the hardwood built-ins—without sacrificing quality?

A new brochure from the American Hardwood Information Center gives savvy and green-minded consumers the inside information they need to make smart choices in flooring, cabinetry, furniture and trim. Whether they’re building, remodeling or redecorating, homeowners can use the “American Hardwoods: Sustainable Solutions” brochure to visualize their choices in light, medium and dark finishes. The Guide features the familiar American favorites including cherry, ash, walnut, the maples and the oaks, along with some perhaps lesser known native species such as elm, sweetgum and sycamore (all are profiled in the Species Guide at www.hardwoodinfo.com).

This no-nonsense 48-page, full-color guide also is a primer on the hows and whys of hardwood sustainability in the U.S., where nearly twice as much hardwood grows as is used each year.

“Sustainable Solutions” is an illustrated, Alder-to-Walnut guide to 20 often-used species, profiling the appearance, properties, availability and typical applications of each. For serious woodworkers, there’s also detailed technical information on strength and mechanical properties.

To receive a free copy of “American Hardwoods: Sustainable Solutions,” go to www.hardwoodinfo.com.
